Fellow POC athlete and Olympic downhiller, Steve Nyman, shredded some muddy water on the Colorado River recently after a brief stint at the Teva Mountain Games held in Vail. He brought Ken Hoeve and Whitney Guild with him to test out their surfing mettle on the Colorado’s mighty flow down at the Glenwood Springs play wave. The bout of recent warm weather combined with the snow-dirt (snirt) effect in the alpine regions of the state caused a rapid snowmelt, and the play wave was seeing upwards of 23,000 cfs (cubic feet per second, about the size of a basketball) pouring through its manmade features. The increased flow swelled over river banks upstream, moving felled timber down the river’s current and creating quite the moving obstacle course for the surfers at the wave. A kayaker I spoke with even said he saw a file cabinet cruising through the wave…yikes!
